The Mile-High Plant: How CBD Helps People Fly
How a prominent cannabidiol compound in Cannabis may improve people’s negative reactions to flying in an airplane.
Why the price difference?
There’s something about high-speed vehicles that passengers have no control over that gives them a unique form of anxiety. Even seasoned travelers can feel the pang of nervousness before a flight.
Every traveler has their own way to deal with the anxiety of getting on an airplane. Some people prefer an hour of yoga before a flight. Others ensure their iPods and headphones have sufficient battery to get them through the whole flight with their favorite music.
Unfortunately, self-calming techniques don’t work for everyone. Thankfully, there’s a plant full of compounds that promote wellness in human beings. That plant is the Cannabis plant.
One of the compounds that may help combat flight-anxiety is cannabidiol, or CBD.
Interestingly, CBD may help with another problem that is commonly associated with flying: nausea.
Let’s take a close look at how CBD may help people enjoy their time spent flying in an airplane.
How CBD May Help Improve Anxiety Tied to Flying in an Airplane
Sadly, there’s not much CBD can do to improve your flight’s poorly-cooked meals nor poor selection of movies. That doesn’t mean it can’t help with your anxiety before and during a flight, though.
According to a 2015 study that was published in the journal Neurotherapeutics. CBD may help combat a variety of anxiety disorders.
Anxiety from flying may be the result an innate fear of dying that stems from of our lack of control over the airplane. What’s more, the only news we ever see about airplanes is news of them crashing. This is in spite of the fact that airplanes are quite safe, according to data from the International Air Transport Association.
As a result of fear mixed with the lack of control, humans have developed anxiety as “adaptive responses essential to coping with threats to survival,” according to the researchers of the 2015 study.
So, how can CBD help combat these deeply rooted survival mechanisms when faced with heavy anxiety before a flight?
To begin with, as we begin to suffer from the anxiety of flying, Esther el al. found that “systemically administered CBD reduced acute increases in heart rate and blood pressure.” In essence, CBD may help improve our initial stress responses that result from a fear of flying.
More importantly, the researchers noted that the anxiety that we get from flying may diminish over time with repeated CBD dosages. The researchers said, “CBD has also been shown to enhance extinction of contextually conditioned fear responses.” In other words, using CBD before a flight may prevent flight-anxiety altogether over the long-run.
In their conclusion, the researchers noted that “overall, existing preclinical evidence strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders.” In terms of anxiety disorders that stem from the fear of flying, they noted that CBD may prevent anxiety through a range of properties including:
Overcoming the anxiety that comes with flying is one thing, dealing with the nausea that flying sometimes causes is another.
How CBD May Help Combat Flying-Induced Nausea and Vomiting
From shaky take-offs to extreme turbulence to bouncy landings, there are lots of reasons why people suffer from nausea and vomiting during their time on an airplane.
Thankfully, CBD seems to help stave off nausea and vomiting. In fact, according to several studies, it does just that.
For example, a 2010 study that was published in PLoS One showed reduced levels of endogenous cannabinoids in people experiencing motion sickness. This suggests that supplementing depleted cannabinoids may help fight nausea caused by motion sickness.
To qualify that supposition, a 2016 study in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research showed that CBD, and its precursor CBDA, can effectively combat anticipated nausea and acute nausea caused by a range of conditions.
In their conclusion, the researchers noted that CBD is a “highly effective antinausea treatment in these animal models without producing sedation or psychoactive effects.” Because it has the ability to help fight nausea without causing the ‘high’ that is generally associated with cannabis use, CBD seems to be an effective way to deal with nausea and vomiting for people experiencing those symptoms during a flight.
Important Things to Remember When Consuming CBD to Improve a Flight
Remember, Cannabis is still federally illegal. That being said, it’s not illegal to travel with CBD on flights that remain within the United States. However, not all CBD products are made in the same way.
To ensure that you have a pleasant flight with your CBD products, make sure you have a few things:
If you’re getting on an international flight, it’s important to look into the laws of any countries that you’re flying to, even if you’re just changing flights there. You wouldn’t want to get stopped in a country like Dubai for possessing CBD because you might not be getting on your next flight.
